December 3rd, 1888 — DADA Classroom, Hogwarts

“One by one—you’ll each have an opportunity,” the professor directed, gesturing to the chalked X on the floor as he waited for the first to step forward.

The class had spent the latter half of the week prior discussing the theory of boggarts and how to dispatch them, but theory was of little use if not put into practice. Generally, Nikolai was able to procure one of the creatures from the castle itself, but Hogwarts seemed to have been—mercifully—devoid of them that term, requiring the defence instructor to ‘order in’, as it were. Now, the boggart lay in wait in a locked trunk which rattled slightly as it moved inside.

“Wand out, then,” he directed the first victim student before opening the trunk and letting the boggart out.

Open to OWL-level (years 3-5) DADA students. First to post comes up to the mark. Please ensure your post includes the form the boggart takes, your character’s goal form, and them casting the spell—if they manage to get that far before cowering in fear!

Please also let me know in a postscript your student’s general spell level (abysmal, below level, at level, above level) so we can see how they do ;)

Headmaster Black,
I have some concerns in regards to my ward's development in the school, to which is of no fault of yours or your staff. From the moment she entered our household, she has been reluctant to learn and I fear for her grades now at Hogwarts. Letters are sent regularly between her and I, as well as from her to my wife, and we have seen no improvement in her writing skills.

I write to you in hopes that you may have some solutions to help her improve in her academics. I am sorry for any inconveniences that she may have caused while at the school, if any have indeed occurred.
From,
Mr. Victor North

December 1, 1888 - Hogwarts Corridors
It had been a while since Sweetie had walked around Hogwarts for the simple purpose of exploring. But it was now that she was allowing her feline companion to roam around under her watch. The cat was free to move as she pleased, though Sweetie was making sure that the creature kept out of trouble. Hopefully this would keep little miss Bijoux out of trouble. The very thought of her cat trying to eat an innocent creature once more was frightening. If the feline ever got hold of another student's pet... Sweetie would never hear the end of it. That was for sure.

Still, it was quite fascinating to watch as the little cat roamed the halls. Acting as if she owned the place. Every once in a while, the creature would jump onto a windowsill and lay down happily. Feeling the sun on her must be nice. The Slytherin Common Room was not the best place to live for most of one's life. Sweetie could understand her cat's desire to want to roam the halls of Hogwarts. If Sweetie was more confident that the mischievous thing wouldn't get into trouble, she would let the girl run around outside as well. But alas, Bijoux was one for chaos. Certainly not listening. Sweetie still adored her stubborn kitty. No matter how frustrating the cat could be.

Watching as Bijoux caught sight of something, Sweetie's stomach dropped. "Now Bijoux, you must not cause any problems." The Slytherin warned the cat. However, the cats tail was waving back and forth. It was a clear sign that the cat was going to pounce! Sweetie couldn't help but look over at what had triggered her cat to do away with the peace. It was not surprising to see a mouse was staring back at the cat. Wide eyes that were surely filled with fear. What a sad sight indeed. But Sweetie couldn't be distracted. As she turned back to her cat, the feline took the opportunity to jump from where it was. The chase was on. Or so the cat thought.

Overestimating herself, the cat ran right into the wall just as the mouse had darted out of the way. Immediately, the cat looked dizzy and confused as the mouse rushed away. Sweetie wouldn't be surprised if the poor thing was just grateful to be alive. Marching over to her cat, Sweetie picked up the stubborn thing. Earning an angry hiss. Groaning, the Slytherin shook her head in frustration. "Have you learned your lesson now? No chasing helpless creatures. It's mean, and you will only hurt yourself in the process." Well, the second part was only a half truth. Sure, the cat could very well harm herself in a hunt. But it was more likely than not that the cat would be victorious when hunting those smaller than her. Not that Sweetie would admit that.

After a moment of meowing in protest, the cat finally calmed down enough that Sweetie was sure that Bijoux would not go running off out of spite. Setting the cat down, Miss Whitledge looked around at the near empty corridor. At least it wasn't too embarrassing of a moment. The very thought of having to run after her own cat would leave her hiding in the library, common room, and in the back of the class room for weeks. And the proud Slytherin would never want that. She gently pet the cat as she thought.

Where else could they go next in the castle? Somewhere not too chaotic. Loosing Bijoux would break her heart. Perhaps simply wandering the corridors would be best. Nothing for the cat to get into trouble with... hopefully. And it didn't seem too crowded today. The more crowded corridors were to be avoided. The cat would either get stepped on, or go running off while Sweetie struggled to get around everyone to keep up.

November 30th, 1888 — A Generic London Ball

To anyone who knew her properly, Ginny’s smile would have clearly belied her discomfort. Even before spending several years as the subject of it, the witch had never been one for gossip—nor did she keep up nearly enough with the who’s who of society to even attempt to appreciate that gossip when it did reach her ears. As such, Virginia Carmichael was rather waiting for this whole exchange to end, that she might retreat to more familiar ground—and no, someone she attended school with did not count when she had left Hogwarts nearly a decade ago!

“How unexpected!” the witch exclaimed, trying to sound vaguely impressed but worried she sounded wholly inauthentic. Acting had only been her strong suit when her life—well, reputation—had been on the line. This…Merlin help her, how long before she could detangle herself from the situation?

Open to her conversational partner (had to have attended Hogwarts when she did) or someone able to drag her elsewhere!

In-Character
Full Name: Archibald Maxwell Skeeter
Nicknames: Archie
Birthdate: March 19th, 1856
Current Age: 32
Occupation: Crime & Politics Reporter for The Daily Prophet
Reputation: 8 – his job is particularly unglamorous, and his brother is obnoxious.
Residence: London
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Wand: Spruce, twelve inches with a dragon heartstring core. Swishy.
Blood Status: Halfblood
Social Class: Middle
Family:
Maxwell Skeeter, Father [1829]
Martha Skeeter née Bagshot, Mother [1835]
Barnabas “Barney” Skeeter, Brother [1859], and family
Antonius “Tony” Skeeter, Brother [1863]
Mortimer “Morty” Skeeter, Brother [1864]
Thompson “Tommy” Skeeter, Brother [1867]
Tamsin “Tammy” Skeeter, Sister [1868]

Irina Skeeter née Baddock, Wife [1864-1884]
Reginald Skeeter, Son [1884]
Appearance:
Archie’s appearance is not particularly exciting; he is neither pretty nor plain, and stands at a reasonable five feet, seven and a half inches with a build that is reasonably fit, but not as much as he might like. He dresses fashionably, perhaps a bit more flamboyantly than most in his acquaintance. Though generally well-kept, his hands often have a smudge or two of ink on them from writing too aggressively. His eyes are a tedious (in his opinion) grey, his nose that of his mother, and his mouth that of his paternal grandfather, he is told. His hair is a shaggy blond mane; while sense would dictate he tie it back, he often refrains from doing so to aggravate his father. He is right-handed.
History:
1856 | Archibald is born the first child to middle class couple Maxwell and Martha Skeeter. Though named for his muggle grandfather, the staff and even his mother quickly take to calling him ‘Archie’, in spite of his father’s hopes for a dignified child.

1859 | Martha carries a second pregnancy to term, another son that they call Barnabas. Archie, too young to fumble about with long names, insists upon calling him Barney—a nickname his brother will grow to hate—and it sticks.

1863 | Martha’s third successful pregnancy yields another son, Antonius.

1864 | In May, Archie has his first epileptic fit, and has the poor sense to do so in front of his father. He is sent to a healer who gives him a foul-tasting tonic to take daily, and the two never speak of it again. July sees Mortimer born as well, named for the children’s maternal grandfather.

1867 | Martha delivers another son, Thompson. That autumn, Archie departs for Hogwarts where, after back-and-forth with the Sorting Hat, it is eventually decided that he shall be placed in Slytherin, a decision made difficult by a mixture of traits from three of the four houses. It is Archie’s own inclinations that see him here, as he feels Slytherin to be the anti-Hufflepuff, and it is already that he has begun to come into conflict with his father.

1868 | At last, Martha delivers the daughter she has always wanted, a lovely, delicate thing called Tamsin.

1869 | In May, Archie’s paternal grandfather, for whom he was named, dies of a heart attack.

1870 | Archie concludes quite quickly that academia is not his cup of tea. He writes his grandfather asking if he really needs school for his intended career, and the two come to an agreement. Though he is intelligent, Archie does only the bare minimum for his schoolwork, with the exceptions of Defence Against the Dark Arts and Astronomy, which he genuinely enjoys.

Though he ceased taking his tonic as soon as he left home and his father could not force him to anymore, it is not until November of this year that Archie has another one of his fits. Mercifully, he is alone in the dormitory when this happens, and so no one sees anything.

1872 | Archie is pleased to receive his OWL grades, and promptly informs his parents that he will not be returning to Hogwarts in September, as, with four OWLs, he has surpassed his grandfather’s requirement for employment. Maxwell is furious, and threatens to turn Archie out; it is only Belladonna’s insistence that ensures Archie remains in the house, though he is told quite firmly that any money he wants, he will have to earn. As a step in this direction, he begins working as a reporter for his grandfather’s magazine.

1877 | He manages to land a job as freelance reporter at The Daily Prophet, continuing to work full time for his grandfather.

1879 | By Christmas, Archie begins to work full time at The Daily Prophet>. He bounces from department to department for the next year, dipping his toes into the waters of each, before finally settling in Crime & Politics under Ian Pengloss. He continues to write the occasional article—about once a month—for his grandfather.

1882 | Set to be married before long, Archie acquires a plot of land in Irvingly so that he (and his bride-to-be) needn’t worry about living under his parents’ roof. To his surprise, his grandfather finances the building of a modest (two storey, four bedroom) home on the plot, declaring it an early wedding gift.

Just after Christmas, Archie leaves his family home to move into his own residence in Swallowbury.

1883 | Archie and Irina marry early in the new year.

1884 | In April, Irina passes just after delivering their son, young Reginald. Distraught and uncertain how to do the whole fathering thing, Archie leaves the lad largely to the care of nannies, and then all but abandons him to his mother’s care, seeing the lad only occasionally. He lets the house in Irvingly, moving instead to a home in London.

1888 | Barney accidently elopes, which Archie finds delightful. With more than four years since the death of his wife, Archie begin to wonder if he should (more sensibly than his brother, though!) get married himself, but sees no real rush—he and Irina were well matched, and he’s hardly about to find an adequate wife just to mother the son he scarcely sees.

November 29, 1888 - Hogwarts Castle Grounds
The days were going by fast this year. It didn't feel as if she had to hide any more. Handsome was gone from Hogwarts, bad feelings were behind her and her sisters for the most part, and the girls who had been harassing her last year had given up this year. It was nice to not worry about everything this year. Still, most of her days was spent studying, classes, and working on homework. Working on things kept her mind busy, helping to stop her from really overthinking the current situation of her living arrangements.

Today was a day for rest besides classes and homework. It was always a good idea to give her mind a break. Days off from class were to focus on studying. Class days were easier on her mind to allow herself some time off after her homework was done. She didn't have much time before the sun was to go down, but it was enough time for some fresh air. Feeling a soft wind flow through her hair, it was nice. Sometimes studying in the fresh air was also nice. She had done so a few times this winter. Though it was easier to focus in the library sometimes.

As always, Sweetie was stuck in her mind. Gazing over at the Black Lake, she wondered what the creatures that lurked inside were up to. What was it like to live the way they did? Was it more freeing? Or were there certain rules of their own that were like a cage to them? She hadn't even realized that she had stopped walking until she sensed another person walking towards her. "What do you think it would be like to be a creature of the Black Lake?" She mused thoughtfully. It didn't really matter to her as to who she was speaking to. As long as it wasn't someone that was hoping to upset her.

In-Character
Full Name: Adam Corin Rose
Nicknames: Monsieur Rose
Birthdate: February 23, 1861
Current Age: 27
Occupation: Hogwarts Art Instructor
Reputation: 8
A bit of an eccentric sort, he definitely raises questions in regards to his preferences in life.
Residence: Hogwarts and/or Bartonburg
Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
Wand: Sycamore, 12", bendy, Fairy Wings
Blood Status: Halfblood
Social Class: Middle
Family:
Dorian Rose father, Art collector and aficionado [1831]
Brielle Rose neé Danvers mother, Socialite [1840]
Ethan Rose brother [1863]
Nathan Rose brother [1865]
Alan Rose brother [1866]
Allison Rose sister [1869]
Appearance: Broad of chest and shoulder, Adam cuts a rather impressive figure standing at five foot seven. He has a stockier sort of build but dresses it impeccably well. He is very particular about his clothing and always dresses in the height of fashion, often wearing suits that most would assume to be above his station and wealth. And, as a man that puts appearances above everything else, he maintains quite the presence. His light brown hair is always styled immaculately, kept cut short along the sides and a bit longer along the top so that it can be styled just right. He’s rarely seen with stubble on his face and always seems to be smiling and flashing those pearly whites. His eyes are a bright blue and very expressive in all things that he does. Despite being an artist in his own right, he is never seen with paint splatter on his hands or any of his clothing. He’s ambidextrous when it comes to writing, painting and wad work. He also tends to talk a great deal with his hands and is none to send a brush or wand flying on accident as a result.
History:
Pre-birth: Dorian and Brielle met at Brielle’s coming out, Dorian having been in London for an art exhibition. The two had hit it off rather well and remained in contact via letter when Dorian went away to travel for another art exhibit. For nearly two years their only contact was via letter. It wasn’t until mention of another gentleman came into the picture that Dorian realized he’d really rather not see her with anyone but him. On the night of Brielle’s twentieth birthday, he showed up at her family’s estate outside of London and saw to a rather abrupt but extravagant proposal. With her father’s permission having been given prior, the two were set to wed at the start of the season just a few weeks after. It came as quite the surprise to some but there was no doubt that love had been found between the two.
1861: Almost ten months later, Adam was born. He was a smiling and happy little boy from the start and the Rose family quickly took to the little boy.
1863: Another boy is born and Adam surprises his parents by actually being quite interested with the new baby. Having been the center of their world for those previous years, Dorian and Brielle were a bit concerned with how he would react. All is well, though, and it looks as though the two will be quite the partners in crime from the start.
1865: Yet another boy is born. A now four year old Adam quickly takes to his newest little brother as well and dotes on him just like he had with his first brother.
1866: Brielle delivers another son not quite a full year after her last. It ends up being a bit of a scary ordeal, both mother and child almost being lost but both luckily pulling through.
1869: The last Rose child is born and finally Brielle has a daughter! With four big brothers, she’s likely to be coddled and protected at all costs. This is the same year Adam finally shows his signs of magic. Not liking the purple outfit his little sister is put in, the ensuing anger sees the little girl in a dress of bright and vivid fuschia instead. It begins the start of his interest in all things art like his father as well as a healthy dose of interest in fashion.
1872: Adam sees his way off to Hogwarts. He’s quickly sorted into Hufflepuff and finds many a friend in the house. Art is a class added to his schedule from the start, one he’ll see through his entire time at Hogwarts.
1874: Starting his third year of school, Adam decides to add Muggle Studies (to further learn about fashion, he hopes) as well as Divination.
1877: Adam sits his OWLs and does decently enough but some classes stand out far more than others. He opts to keep Charms, DADA, Muggle Studies, Potions, and Transfiguration. That summer, the great migration to Hogsmeade happens. His family becomes of the ones to move to Hogsmeade and quickly settle into a new home in Bartonburg. Dorian also opens up a bit of a studio on the main floor of their home and hosts many an event there featuring his own art as well as other up and coming artists. One of Adam’s own pieces even ends up on display.
1879: Adam finishes his schooling at Hogwarts, once more with decent test scores, but promptly finds himself wanting to go off to France. He does so with the approval from his father and finds himself living with family from his father’s side. He delves right into the world of art and fashion and even finds himself being featured in an exhibition or two as he continues to progress as an artist. His work proves to be a bit more on the abstract side be he has some obvious influences from nature as well as fashion in his works.
1883: Adam finds himself back in Hogsmeade around the time of the Quidditch World Cup. After a few years of travelling about selling his art, designing clothing on the side, and simply just living life to the fullest in the most artistic and fashionable of areas, he finds he actually quite enjoys the homeliness of what Hogsmeade and even Irvingly have to offer. A brief fling is had with a rather pleasant young woman but both part ways rather amicably at the end of that summer and Adam goes off for another bout of travelling.
1884: After nearly losing his father in the plague, Adam finds himself returning back to Hogsmeade once again but this time it will be to stay. The near loss makes him realize he needs to spend more time with his family while he has the chance. He stays with them for a time before finding his own small, but nice, home in Bartonburg. That summer, he applies to become the Art Instructor at Hogwarts. He begins working there that fall and quickly falls in love with the position. It isn’t long before he becomes rather well known with the student body as the one to go to for gossip, relationship advice and even fashion advice. He’s quick to become the Art Club Advisor and takes said position just as seriously as his actual Instructor position.
1885: Adam quite enjoys the Pan Magical Games and thrives even with all the different cultures around him. It’s this year that he starts his usually biweekly tea times in the Art Room for anyone interested in coming. It proves to be a great way for the students to get the chance of getting to know their foreign peers better. And when the CoB is cancelled, he’s just as upset as the students that don’t get to partake. It really is quite the travesty after all.
1887: The World Market comes to town and Adam couldn’t be more excited. Having started to grow just a bit stir crazy since he no longer does much travelling, he quite enjoys the fair. He’s just lucky to have not been there the day the tigers went wild. The same can’t be said for one of his brothers, however, and the family is once more threatened with a potential loss of life. Luckily, however, he survives but will have the scars to show for it for the remainder of his life.
1888: Whispers and rumors finally seem to reach Adam that his effemate and somewhat flamboyant personality is due to the fact that he’s a homosexual man. He hardly pays it any mind as he’s fully aware he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but he does indeed enjoy the company of a woman from time to time. He simply is a creative and artistic sort that tends to be a bit flashy from time to time. He does little to dissuade any rumors though, not really caring all that much what others think of his sexual status so long as they see him for the Fashionable Artist that he is. Of course, when the fog hits, it leads to far more issues and gossip to be focused on so he feels relatively out of the clear for the time being. He spends the majority of his summer working on new paintings and other designs to help further his savings. He’s grateful when the fog lifts and looks forward to starting his fifth year of teaching.
Personality: Eccentric. Flamboyant. Creative. Artistic. Fashionable. Gossipy. Flighty. Jovial. Charming.
