Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

My Dearest Miss Spaans,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and steady spirits. I write to you not as a stranger, though until recently, I confess I did not know your name or your face. I write to you as your aunt—your father’s sister—and more than that, as someone who would very much like to know you, should you be willing.

You see, it was only quite recently that I learned of your existence. Your father, Don Juan—my brother—was many things: mischievous, clever, and exasperating, and, as it now seems, rather more secretive than even I gave him credit for. To learn that he had a daughter that none of us knew about has come as both a shock and—if I may say so without presumption—a joy. A niece! The first of a new generation! You are already family, no matter how belatedly we have discovered each other.

I imagine this may all be overwhelming for you, and I do not wish to press upon you more than is welcome. But I did want to offer you the hand of kinship, and to say—plainly and honestly—that you are not alone. Whether you wish to know the Dempseys better now, or simply to sit with the knowledge of us, please know that you are thought of fondly already.

Should you ever wish to write, or visit, or merely ask questions about the curious tangle of your extended family, you need only send word. I should like very much to hear from you, if and when you are ready. And if you're not—just yet—that is perfectly all right too.

I live most of the year in Hogsmeade, but travel often to Galway and London, and I’m always happy to make time for a meeting, be it tea and conversation or simply a walk and silence. However you wish to be known, and however you wish to begin—if you wish to begin at all—it would be entirely your choice.

With affection and an open heart,
Your aunt,
Mrs Christabel Daphnel, née Dempsey

It was exciting to hear from you! I have my Aunt Charlotte on my Mama's side, but she never met my Mama, so it's different than aunts who know my father better than I do. (I scarcely know him very well at all.) I think that my seeing anyone is up in question with the whole lawsuit thing — I think? — but I do hope to come to Ireland at some point, and to start to know that piece of me.

I live in Scotland now but I understand that Ireland is very different, even if it still feels closer to Scotland than it does to Oostzaan. Have you ever been to the Netherlands?

Your niece,
Kaatjie Spaans

Miss Spaans,
I hope you will permit me to call you Kaatjie, once you are comfortable with us and of course as soon as it is possible I should very much like to meet you. I have no children of my own and a great desire to spoil what relations I do have!

Ireland and Scotland are indeed very alike in climate and landscape, but I'm sure you will come to appreciate their differences, just as Im sure Scotland must be very different to the NEtherlands. I have never been, but I trust you will be able to make some recommendations for any future trip I should take there!

Tell me, what are your favorite kinds of books? I adore reading and am myself a writer, so would love to know what sort of books catch your interest.

When I read for fun I often read in Dutch, but I read The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and liked it. I also liked Black Beauty, with the horse.

It's rainier here - we get rain at home, but not like this. There was more sunshine at home. Sometimes it was windier, though.

I am excited to meet you! If you call me Kaatjie, am I allowed to call you Aunt Christabel?

Your niece,
Kaatjie Spaans
