One of the cheapest homeless shelters in Victorian London charged four pennies to sleep in a coffin. Which was... still better than sleeping upright against a rope? — Jordan / Lynn

December 23, 1895 — Diagon Alley, Quality Quidditch Supplies
Jin had slipped out rather early that morning against all better judgement. He hadn’t told Abeoji where he’d gone, obviously, but neither had he told any of his brothers who would be bound to catch him in a lie the moment it slipped his lips. Too bad. It was a necessary evil and he’d take the punishment that was dealt if he got caught.

He’d decided, late last night, on exactly the perfect gift for Ahn-Bo-ah this holiday. It surprised him frankly that he hadn’t thought of it before, especially after seeing him so thrilled for (and during) the Frost Spirit Race earlier that year. Carrow-ssi had been generous to lend his brother some extra quidditch gear, that much Jin couldn’t begrudge the man. But Ahn-Bo deserved to have his own broom at least, especially after everything he’d been suffering since their arrival to Britain. Even if that meant they had to keep it hidden from Yeom. Jin didn’t like keeping secrets from their father. Somehow they always had a way of coming out and the consequences were always worse than they might have been out of a spiteful need to remind them that they shouldn’t lie to their Abeoji. But again, this was a necessary evil. It was the only thing that made his brother truly happy.

So, before anyone could wake, Jin dressed quickly and slipped out of the house. Diagon Alley was bustling even at this early hour of morning but Quality Quidditch Supplies was still closed when he arrived. For a terrifying moment, Jin was worried they’d be closed all day! But the sign on the door said they’d open around noon, so he decided to grab a quick bite. He also had to finish Eun-Ho’s gift shopping too. Both of those activities brought him to around 1 o’clock, and by the time Jin circled back to Quality Quidditch Supplies, it was open and the newest broom in the display window glittered temptingly.

He paused outside the window to give it a once over. Jin didn’t know much of anything about the latest brooms, especially not here in Britain. Back home he’d only known what he did because of Bo-ah’s eager excitement to share with him. Idly, Jin scratched the back of his head. Ssi-bal. He hoped one of the staff members might be able to help him choose the right one…

Cash still maintained his broom to high-standards, although if pressed he could not entirely articulate why. His flights these days were all ornamental, even when he challenged himself with them. But he had not stopped maintaining his broom, so he was a regular at Quality Quidditch Supplies, and even as he was aware that it was frivolous he did not think he would change the habit anytime soon.

He walked from Wellingtonshire to High Street, and was about to step up to the shop door when he saw a familiar frame standing in front of the window. "Jeong?" he said, raising an eyebrow curiously. While he'd learned that Jeong wasn't nearly as much of an amateur as he'd thought, he also hadn't struck Cash as the QQS type.

But he was still here.

Jin was still staring into the display, chewing on his lower lip now, when the sound of his name  - or part of it - echoed in his direction. Distracted enough to not realize it at first, he was surprised to see Lestrange-ssi by the entry when he finally looked up. He didn't know the man well beyond the single interaction they'd had some months ago, but his handsome face was rather hard to forget.

“Mr. Lestrange,” he greeted by way of his rather roundly-accented, softened English. Bending slightly into a suggestion of a bow, Jin turned towards the other. What a coincidence to see him here, quidditch-adjacent again. Or was it?

Cash offered a thin, slight smile at Mr. Jeong and his bow. "Looking for something?" he asked. Longingly looking through the windows at broomsticks did not strike him as something done by people who were not particularly invested in Quidditch. There had to be a reason.

Having had no polite question to ask in an attempt to initiate conversation, Jin remained quiet until Lestrange spoke again. Surprised, maybe, at the direct nature of his query however, Jin gave a small nod.

“Yes, actually,” he acquiesced, sheepishness taking claim of his expression. One hand came up to rub the back of his head again. “I was thinking to purchase a broom for my—” he caught the word brother before it could slip out knowing, already, that it would sound strange in context. He knew too much about Ahn-Bo to be mere brothers (like the fact that he got numb fingers after about twenty minutes on quick-acceleration brooms and then requested circulation massages thereafter to get feeling back) and, maybe Jin was a little paranoid, but he’d rather be thought slightly odd for being too close to an acquaintance than too close to a— sibling. He forced the grimace back before it could take root. “friend,” he finished instead. He hurried along to keep the pause from meaning anything.

But I don’t know too much about your English brooms. I saw only one name that I recognized through the window,” he made a vague gesture as if to explain that was why he was standing here like an idiot “so I was… hesitating.” He dropped his hand from his head and laughed lightly. “Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea after all.

Cash was familiar with pauses in sentences before describing someone as a friend, and filed the pause away in his mind. It probably meant nothing — he did not know Seojin Jeong well enough to speculate yet — but he still noted it. Either he would have the opportunity to find out if Jeong was like him, or he wouldn't.

A broom was an expensive gift, besides.

He gave a slight, closed-mouth smile at Jeong's daunted reaction to the concept of buying a broom. "Well," Cash said, "I do have a great deal familiarity with English brooms. So whether it was a good idea or not, I can help you take a look?"

He did not have to help, but he was curious.

The offer to help was unexpected and kind. Jin turned to Lestrange, eyes wide in surprise as he blinked. “Jinjja?” He couldn’t help but chirp, knowing full well Lestrange would not understand enough to answer him. He quickly schooled his features into something more grateful however and inclined his head into a polite thanks. “That’s very kind of you,” he added, voice soft and round as he expressed his gratitude. “I would much appreciate the help, if you have the time to spare.”

Jin wasn’t sure if he was making a mistake or rather solidifying a potential acquaintance in Lestrange as he accepted the offer. In the months since they’d met, he’d come to familiarize himself with the name ‘Lestrange’ and the family associated to it. Upstanding and well respected— at least to the passing eye. It was one Abeoji approved of above others too, so if nothing else and as long as he tread carefully, it was a good excuse as to having eloped to London without word. Dangerous in the same vein due to the nature of said elopement however.

Jin nodded towards the door. “After you,” he offered politely.

Cash blinked at the strange language, but the flutter of confusion faded off of his face in the next beat. "I have the time," he said smoothly; he was already planning on buying Quidditch supplies, after all. And looking at broomsticks was hardly a hardship. He was still trying to hold on to slightly too much dignity in this acquaintanceship to verbalize that, though.

He stepped in through the door, held it open for Jeong after him. "What kind of flying does your friend like to do?" Cash asked, leading the way towards the wall of broomsticks, as well as the slips for special-ordering them. This was the sort of thing that could get Cash to be almost chatty.
