One of the cheapest homeless shelters in Victorian London charged four pennies to sleep in a coffin. Which was... still better than sleeping upright against a rope? — Jordan / Lynn
If he was being completely honest, the situation didn't look good, but Sylvano was not in the habit of being completely honest about anything. No reason to start now.

August 10th, 1895 - Jeong Event

There was no avoiding this one. Another family from Joseon making their way into British society was cause for his mother to get all in a tizzy, winding up his sisters as well. Nani and Yu-mi had spent far too much time getting ready that Min had disappeared back into the annex, though hadn't gone so far as to mess up his smart robes. Instead he'd catalogued some of the texts he'd been meaning to organize and alphabetize. Surely that was good enough to keep him occupied, but clean.

Once the time had arrived, they'd flooed to the address given and then the dance began.

Nani had been on his arm for most of the evening, his youngest sister a little less interested in such things than their other sister. Nani tended to take after Min in personality, more comfortable around books and quiet than amongst their peers, but this would be good for them. Neither had much luck this season so far and with its impending end, Min knew he wouldn't get any further, but either of his sisters might.

They hadn't made it much longer before Nani was swept away by their mother, off to meet some eligible gentleman of some sort, leaving Min to finally pluck up the fortitude to approach the guests of honor this evening. His mother had made it clear he ought to introduce himself (and perhaps a sister, but he'd spared Nan from that on purpose) and he supposed now as as good of a time as any. There were several brothers that Min would never keep straight, but as soon as he found an opening, he took a deep breath and approached the ridiculously tall man; he'd never seen someone from his own country so tall, it was a little intimidating.

Regardless, he bowed low enough to be considered respectable and straightened up with a tentative smile. "Welcome to England." Starting in English, but continuing in their native language, "You've got all the mothers all wound up." He motioned to his own, enthusiastically chatting away with a few others, meaning it lightheartedly.

The English had strange clothes, strange traditions, and even stranger food. Thus far, he hadn't been overly impressed with the locale—though he had to admit, he did enjoy the tighter fit of their men's fashions over what he'd worn in Joseon. Not only did he get to show off the healthy body he worked so hard to maintain, but he also got to enjoy seeing the shapeliness of others.

Ahn-Bo hadn't been entirely certain of the sequence of events that were expected, but he knew there would be dancing at some point. He'd had to practice the dances countless times until Yeom deemed him 'acceptable.' Some of his brothers weren't quite as agile and had suffered much longer, more intense lessons. The dancing had begun, though he had yet to sign any dance cards. There were plenty of feminine eyes and blushes thrown his way—which he absolutely delighted in. Tossing a smirk here, a glance there.

He'd heard that there were several others from Joseon in the community—with some attending the event. Yun was the family name of one whom Yeom had made it very clear had daughters they were not to waste their time on. Apparently, the family were not purebloods. (Not that Ahn-Bo cared either way.) The puppet master had a specific goal he wanted to achieve, however, and it required a rich, upper class, well-to-do pureblood wife.

It was nice to hear Joseono from someone who wasn't his family. Ahn-Bo grinned, returning the bow in greeting. "Thank you. I'm used to it thankfully—though I suppose a family of several eligible, handsome bachelors cropping up would be rather exciting." He flicked a meaningful glance at the other bachelors across the way, "Are they always this dull?"

Min felt a little more comfortable being truthful when he knew the room at large could not understand him. Though if his mother caught wind, he would surely get an earful. "Near the end of the season is when things get monotonous, so I'm told it's good timing." Min didn't particularly pay much attention to these sorts of things, his mother did that for him, but it was hard to miss the chatter amongst his sisters when everything had been announced.

He had to hide the threatening smirk at the comment of the affair. Min always found these sorts of events a little draining. He was somewhat outgoing naturally, but not very good at small talk on unimportant things. He would much rather be embroiled in a stimulating conversation on an interest that trying to fumble his way through pleasantries and the like. Fortunately, his current company was intriguing enough that perhaps the typical fist-conversation sort of awkwardness would be less. Given he was part of the equation though, nothing was off the table.

"I find the whole thing tedious myself," Including his fellow bachelors, unless they were in an academic field akin to his. .Fortunately this was not an all-year thing and he was mostly saved from having to participate outside of the summer months. Min used to escape the winters to somewhere warm where he could study whatever it was that held his interest at the time, but as he got older and closer to the age where he should settle down, he'd promised his mother he wouldn't travel quite so extensively; he already missed it. Fortunately his mother's disaster of an outbuilding kept him busy enough these days. "But there is no escaping the claws of the older generation with their expectations, sometimes." He added, almost ruefully.

It was a pity to hear that dull events like these would be his life now. His and his brothers, who hated it even more than he did. At least their first year of it would be just a blip. They’d managed to sweep in just before the season’s end, and would have all winter before they had to be dressed up and shoved back into the spotlight.

Ahn-Bo nodded, his own grin rueful. “For some of us, the expectations are more alike to requirements.” Before he was asked about the cryptic statement (Yeom would have his head - literally), he quipped, “Sunbaenim, what do you spend your time doing when you aren’t having to deal with expectations?” He grinned, curious to what type of person Yun Min-Kyu really was.
sunbaenim: formal honorific for a senior or mentor, used to show respect to someone who has more experience in a field like school or entertainment, regardless of age
