One of the cheapest homeless shelters in Victorian London charged four pennies to sleep in a coffin. Which was... still better than sleeping upright against a rope? — Jordan / Lynn
If he was being completely honest, the situation didn't look good, but Sylvano was not in the habit of being completely honest about anything. No reason to start now.

Ivy wasn't hurt enough for the hospital, but she was hurt enough for it to be inconvenient. Her robes smelled like ash and the burn on her calf was angry, blistered, and making her limp. Once the paperwork as done, she headed up into the atrium of the Ministry and walked as briskly as the injury would allow to emerge from the building. With a crack!, she apparated from the street into the small garden of the McKinnon household.

It was evening, after most working hours — if he wasn't working the night shift, he ought to be home.

Ivy knew that she ought to knock on the door. Instead, she bent &mash; ignoring the responding ache in her blistered calf — and scooped up a fistful of pebbles. She straightened, and squinted until she was sure that she ha the right bedroom window from the outside — she started throwing pebbles at the glass panes.

Sleep. That’s all that he’d wanted was to finally get some sleep after a nearly 12 hour shift. Most of that had been spent on his feet, and yet Derek didn’t seem to be able to get himself comfortable in his bed. Edie had gotten in late again so Derek had cooked her up some eggs; a simple meal but Edie had never been a fussy one. After he’d seen to his sister and gotten an ear full of her latest clients’ tactics, he’d hopped into bed in hopes that this might finally be able to drift off.

Of course, just as that was about to happen - he was so close he could feel himself slipping off…

There was a ping on his window pane.

Of course Derek thought he was imaging it, but after the fourth tap on the glass, he figured it was an owl. Upon getting up, he realized it was very much NOT an owl, and someone was throwing pebbles at his bloody window. Derek wrenched open the window pane, narrowly dodging a stray pebble before peering down at the ground to find a familiar figure below. “Sandow?!” He whisper shouted, squinting and then rubbing his eyes to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. No, it was most certainly the auror. He’d recognize that stiff posture anywhere. Fuck, what’d she get herself into this time?

Shutting the window, Derek shoved his feet into his slippers, threw on his robe and grabbed his healers kit (because 9 times out of 10 anyone who showed up throwing pebbles at his window likely needed something tended to) and descended down the stairs. He threw open the door. It was July, but still somewhat chilly, and he spotted the auror’s small figure just next to the hydrangea bushes. Wordlessly, not wanting to wake the entire neighborhood up, Derek ushered her in quickly.

“What the devil, you couldn’t knock on the door like a normal person?” He whisper-hissed as she made her way towards him. His eye immediately noticed the pronounced limp. “Or maybe send an owl? Whats happened to you?”

Ivy had just about given up on McKinnon coming down when she saw the window open and grinned to herself. She waited with her hands on her hips, relatively satisfied that this had worked, and followed his wave into his house. She'd been in here before, but still glanced around to affirm that she had a sense of things — no dark wizards in corners, no major surprises.

"Didn't want to disturb the house if you weren't home," she said with a shrug, mostly unapologetic. "I've a burn. If you can take a look at it."

She'd pay him, of course. But he was saving her a trip to the hospital waiting room, if he'd see her now.

Well, her reasoning was fine, but that still didn’t prevent Derek from nearly rolling his eyes. What was wrong with using the front door? His siblings knew he was nearly on call every single day of his life; an auror showing up at his house unannounced with injuries was hardly something to bat an eye at.

But he knew he should appreciate Sandow’s consideration of his time, so deigned to say nothing and only give her a cursory glance as she stepped over the threshold. “Of course I can take a look,” He said, pressing his lips together as he ushered her into the sitting room. “What happened?”
