Chapter I
1874 - 1884The cusp of summer sees Elizabeth Chattaway born near Cambridge, her father an auror and her mother, as befitting a woman of her status, simply his wife.
Birdie’s early years were spent in media res, right down to being a middle child. Even from birth, it seemed as though she did not wish to be a bother, content to be in the background of a family full of love and energy, cheering on her siblings’ triumphs. Her first act of magic was, like much of her years, similarly quiet, unobtrusive, sparking life back into a wilted flower arrangement at the age of six.
Out of doors, though, Birdie truly lived up to her name, possessing a lightness and energy when she could run through the grass that scarcely resembled her withdrawn indoor-self. Oh, she lacked the coordination for most outdoor pursuits, but did enjoy climbing trees, picking flowers, and even catching frogs with her younger brother (much to the chagrin of her put-upon governess).Chapter II
1884But just as storm clouds can roll across the sun, so too can they shadow one’s life. Like many families, the Chattaways were struck by the Laughing Plague of 1884—indeed, seemingly every single one of them, down to long-lived Granny Plumm. Birdie’s proved to be a mild case, and she was the first of the family to recover. Granny Plumm was the second, but by that point, the rest of the family had perished. Chapter III
1884 - 1891With no other relations immediately available to take on an orphan, Birdie falls into the care of her great-grandmother. At the time, Granny Plumm had lived in Hogsmeade, but the woman declared this was “no longer a sound decision” and the pair relocated to Cornwall. Indeed, this was the first sign that the events of the summer had hit her more seriously than originally thought.
Granny Plumm remained sharp-eyed and sharp-witted until the day she died, but as time wore on, became convinced that it was magic itself, not just a magical illness, that had taken the whole family, and she banished it from her life—and, subsequently Birdie’s.
There was no Hogwarts for Birdie, just a muggle governess and a repeated reminder to put a lid on it whenever quiet acts of accidental magic came out. Birdie did not know how one could put a lid on such a thing, but nothing disastrous happened as a result of her mostly ignoring it, so it could have been worse.
Though her magical abilities essentially stagnate, Birdie grows in other areas. She proves to have a good mind for languages, picking up both French and German under the tutelage of her governess. Her watercolour skills are dubbed “more than proficient” by her guardian, and the gardener welcomes her occasional assistance in the flowerbeds. Even her coordination improves, allowing her to play croquet with her great-grandmother as long as the older woman’s health allows.Chapter IV
1891 - 1895The diagnosis comes when Granny Plumm is at the ripe old age of 143: consumption. Such an ailment would not be critical in the magical world, but eschewing magic meant eschewing healers. Besides, the old woman reasoned—she had lived quite long enough anyways.
Now nearing adulthood, Birdie served as a companion and carer both for her guardian, who insisted on remaining at home until she did not remain anywhere any longer.Chapter V
1895 - PresentNew year, new start. Indeed, Granny Plumm passes in the first days of the year. The funeral is a small affair, attended only by the household staff. The long illness, however, provided ample time to ensure affairs would be in order, and while Birdie isn’t sure what she’s going to do with herself, she takes comfort in the fact that she shouldn’t need to think about it too hard for now.
This proves to not be the case.
Though she is set to inherit a comfortable living, it seems that, unless she marries, she will not take hold of any of it until the age of thirty-five, which seems like an eternity away. This, the solicitor explained, was because her grandmother did not “wish her to become some sort of hermit” (Birdie would have at least liked the option...). The small allowance left her is hardly enough to keep a house so some digging is done by the solicitor, some third-cousins are found, and Birdie is to be tossed back into the magical world, surrounded by strangers, and expected to be fine about it.
How bad could it be?
