Ahn-Bo Jeong
Ahn-Bo found himself nodding along. It seemed like a perfectly reasonable response. He supposed if he had bothered to have any prized possessions, he would want a central location for them all too. It was with sharp attention that he observed Gilbert's movements. Rather than a weapon or something else equally dangerous, he withdrew a simple jar of what appeared to be a sweet of some kind.
The glass clinked as it was set on the table before him. In Joseon culture, it would have been considered impolite for a guest to refuse the offering of food or drink. Fortunately, they weren't in Joseon. (Ahn-Bo wasn't particularly fond of social etiquette anyhow.)
Grinning, he nodded his acknowledgment but made no move to take any. He had no idea what they were, and he wasn't about to test it out when he was alone with what was likely a very old and certainly intimidating vampire. His umma and nursemaid had always told him not to take any food—particularly sweets—from strangers. It was something taught to all children of the court, though it was the princes and princesses that were the ones most likely at risk of poisoning.
Ahn-Bo allowed himself to be prompted, beginning with a theatrical tone as if he were telling a child a bedtime story. "Long, long ago, when the tiger used to smoke," he began, reciting the beginning of every childhood fairytale he knew. He paused for a moment, and his voice returned to normal as he resumed with: "Well, not that long ago for you, I gather. My family was part of the royal court in Joseon. After I finished with my studies, I was expected to follow my father's path and become an officer. The English have something similar." He waved his hand dismissively, "I angered my parents so badly that they tossed me out, instead. Fortunately, a friend's father was willing to take me in."It felt wrong to call Jin just a 'friend'... there really wasn't anything else appropriate to say.
"His father is a collector of sorts, considering he collected a few other boys around our age. He trained us up as performers, and we became fairly renowned," he smirked as he hedged around the details. "As you already know Gilbert, with fame comes wealth and power. Certain people aren't equipped to handle those things reasonably. Lo and behold, my adoptive father was one of them." He paused to provide a casual aside. "(Greedy.) Evidently there's more wealth in this country than ours, so now we're here. I don't know if you've ever been married, but it seems if you marry into a wealthy family, you get wealthier from a..." His mind fumbled for the English word. Finally, he settled on, "Dower. And thus, our story ends." He gave the vampire a mild grin and took another gulp of his drink.
