July 25th, 1895 - Hippogriff Races

This was the sort of thing Dean would normally enjoy. Normally. When Don Juan hadn't signed up to try and race hippogriffs and simultaneously give him a heart attack. There was no chance to try and talk him out of it, as Dean had only been hovering in the Dempsey family's periphery today, keeping an eye out for Hanna or anyone else who could possibly distract him from what was likely going to be a disaster and the need to fabricate an excuse to go to the hospital.

It wasn't going well. Even nursing a deep pour of whiskey wasn't keeping him from constantly keeping an eye out for what was coming next.

Thankfully, all of the worry radiating off of him was at least short-lived. Don Juan had somehow managed to seriously offend his hippogriff (to no surprise on Dean's part) and he was unceremoniously booted from completing the competition, much to Dean's relief. It wasn't quite fair, but he'd had enough heart palpitations over the course of his relationship with Don Juan, this one seemed highly unnecessary.

It took a few minutes after the end of Don Juan's attempt, to get him alone, but Dean sidled up next to him eventually, still working on the same glass of whiskey, though not quite as frantically. "I see not everyone will tolerate your particular brand of disrespect." He teased, a grin on his lips to make it obvious.

Don Juan may have escaped the hippogriff encounter without any physical wounds, but he was nursing his injured pride. For someone who lived the way he did on the strength of his reputation and charisma, this was far worse. He would much rather have broken a rib doing something that looked heroic than been shuffled off by a matronly Hogwarts professor while dozens of people were watching from the audience. The only saving grace was that at least some of the other riders had gotten in the air by the time this was occurring, so not everyone's attention was on him.

(Kaatjie would certainly have been watching him, though. Don Juan was going to kill as much time as possible before heading back up to where his family was seated in the hopes that something more interesting would occur in the meantime to distract her from it).

In any case, he was in a bad mood and not ready to be cheered, no matter how handsome Dean looked with that sort of smile on his face. "His loss," he grumbled. "I'm a god-damn delight."

Dean snickered over his whiskey. He only felt a little bad that Don Juan was so put out by the whole thing. It seemed like a silly thing to be invested in, but then again Dean's level of interest in frivolity didn't expand much beyond his typical nonsense, of which there had been woefully little lately. He wasn't bored and he wasn't stretching himself too thin, it was a good balance at the moment, he thought.

"You are," he agreed, still chuckling a little. With the danger passed, Dean felt a little more at liberty to take things with humor. He had a cheeky comment about being disrespectful later on the tip of his tongue, but Don Juan still looked a little too dejected to let it loose. "I'm glad my heartrate gets to return to normal, at any rate." He said instead, murmured quietly, noting that nobody was probably close enough to hear, but didn't want to take the chance anyway.

Don Juan thought this remark about heartrate to be rather melodramatic. One would think between the two of them Don Juan would have the monopoly on melodrama, but Dean dipped his toes in specifically when it came to romance. Or maybe just when it came to Don Juan.

"Your heartrate, pshaw," he said, as he started unbunkling the riding jacket he evidently would have no need of today.
"They were hardly going to let someone die at the Sanditon." And some degree of injury, even a light maining, would have been far preferable to this.

This was next-level sulking for Don Juan and Dean was highly amused. He'd been truthful about at least feeling better now that there was no chance of injury. "Yes well, still." Dean would prefer Don Juan in one piece, obviously, though he couldn't say as much out loud at the moment. "I'm sorry you did not get to fly." Relieved as he might be, Dean could see that it wasn't being taken well. It would have been an experience to be had, certainly. Not one Dean was interested in, he much preferred to keep his feet solidly on the ground. He wasn't even going to arrange to try it in a different setting. Nope, all set.

"Will your siblings let you live it down?" Dean knew his wouldn't, if he'd tried.
