There was a moment where Cass swayed. Suddenly unsure of what to make of her silence, or how she’d stopped looking at him… Had he miscalculated somehow? No, this was the right thing, his mind snapped back as quickly as the thought occurred to him. The relationship he had with his conscience was… tumultuous, at best. But he always trusted its intuition between right and wrong, especially with matters of the heart.
So it was a good thing he kept blundering on, to make up for the way he put their heated moment on ice. The admission felt fraught with risk, I’d like to see you again, but her expression soon dispatched every concern. It was as though something lit up in her, lifting her warm gaze like a sail. A sharp intake of breath anticipated the gentle caress of her hand, his eyes drawn into the study of every inch of her pretty face.
“Then I have no choice but abide by the lady’s wishes,” he smiled, the easiest one he’d shared with anyone all day despite the lingering sense of disappointment over what could have been. Gently he tugged at her hand, and pressed another soft and lingering kiss on it. A goodbye, of sorts. “Until then… Have a good evening, Miss Dashwood.”
Knowing it would be safer for appearances if she re-entered the party ahead of him, the man lingered back as she moved away. He had no interest in returning to the festivities, at any rate. There was… another matter he had to deal with. Something he would’ve much preferred to forget in favor of snogging Poppy, but it would seem this evening was destined for other things.
Come what may, there would be a morning on the other side of this where Poppy would have no question that he treated her with the respect she deserved. And the feeling of their first kiss, once they have it… will tell them something unequivocal, unadulterated by whatever twisted effect this strange fruit created.
