Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

September 1st, 1895 — Great Hall, Ravenclaw Table
Gia had been ecstatic all day. As much as she loved seeing her mother every day and spending playtime with her brother alone, Gia was very ready for her second year. This year, she could be a mentor, a guide, an advisor. This year, she wasn't new and she wouldn't let boys put frogs in her robes. Gia was ready for all the mayhem this term, thank you.

Sitting tall in her seat at the table (she'd grown nearly three inches this summer!), Gia clapped gracefully for the newest members of her house. Doing her best to be welcoming without frightening her potential new friends, Gia counted in her head before burting out, "Welcome to Ravenclaw! All houses have different strengths, but we're the smart, creative, clever ones. And we have the most beautiful common room!" Gia looked to her housemates for confirmation.
Open to: 2-3 First-year Ravenclaws, 1-2 older Ravenclaws

It was hard to believe that six years ago he was standing in the line with his peers waiting to be sorted; it was even harder to believe that next year, as long as his grades and scholarship held, he’d be graduating next year. Cad was a little slower to clap than the young Ravenclaw, although his grin was no less bright. The Sorting Ceremony was one of his favorite events that happened at Hogwarts.

He’d been leaning forward on his elbows, trying to catch the names as the first years went down the line, but when Miss Shacklebolt popped up with her speech, he sat back with a laugh. “Well, we’ve got plenty more going for us than just books and brains. The hat doesn't make mistakes, so it put you all here for a reason. I'm happy to see we have so many coming our way." Cad nodded. "And the view out our windows beats everyone else’s, easy. You’ll see what I mean tonight.” Being up in the tower was a lot better than being in the dungeons.

Poppy beamed with pride as she hopped off the stool and made her way to the Ravenclaw table. She couldn't wait to owl her parents that she'd been sorted into the same house as her Ma! The students, no-her new housemates-looked nice enough. Though, there was a sliver of disappointment that she hadn't been sorted into the same house as her best friend, Margie.

Heart pounding and cheeks a bright red, she took a seat next to another girl who Poppy thought might be directly addressing her? And then a prefect even chimed in! What a warm welcome, indeed! She grinned, "I can't wait to see for myself! My Ma was in Ravenclaw and she told me all about it." She paused for a mere heartbeat, before she asked, "What else is there?" She liked books herself quite a bit. And she supposed she could be described as smart or clever, even.

“I’m sure she’ll be excited.” Cad smiled. “One of my older sisters was a Ravenclaw, and she was ecstatic when I owled her to say we shared a house.” Enid had been thrilled that he was a Ravenclaw, but then again it wasn’t like he had qualities that would have made him a Slytherin like Isolde. He hadn’t expected to land here, but Cad was thrilled that he had.

Cad’s fingers toyed at the edge of his sleeve for a second before he lifted his gaze to the first year. “Well, I think one of my favorite things is the riddle to get into the common room. It changes often, so you can’t just memorize it. Sometimes it’s simple, sometimes it’s downright maddening.” He’d gotten locked out before when he couldn’t figure out the answer, but luckily Professor Foxwood had been right behind him. “But if you get stuck, someone will always come along. Or you can find me, and I’ll be happy to help.” It was his duty as a prefect, after all.

Gia grinned, her position legitimized by the presence of her prefect. "Thank you, Mr. Glynn." Turing back to the new girl, instantly seeing a way to be helpful, Gia instructed, "Mr. Glynn is a prefect. That means he has extra responsibilities and helps enforce rules. He also answers questions and is someone to talk to if you are ever lost." Giving a little wave, Gia added, "I'm not a prefect, but I would be pleased to give you a tour of the castle tomorrow, Miss MacFusty." Gia smiled, she didn't second guess the girl's name.

Inclining his head at Miss Shacklebolt because her explanation was well wonderful, Cad realized he probably should have added that he was prefect; it was hard to forget that the first years might not know much of anything for a while. “Yeah. If you’ve questions about classes, schedules, or what not to do if you’d like to avoid detention, I’m the one to ask.” In fact he couldn’t recall the last time he’d even gotten detention. Certainly not last year.

“MacFusty, was it?” He asked, making sure he had the name right. “Our resident volunteer tour guide here is willing to show you around, you’d do well to take her up on it. The castle’s not as straightforward as it looks.” Cadogan straightened slightly as he tried not to look at the commotion that was beginning with another first year Ravenclaw. “And of course you’ll see me about often too. Don’t hesitate if you need something. I'm also president of the Transfiguration club, if you find the class interests you at all.”

Cad glanced toward Millie, his female prefect counterpart, for a moment – it was always something during sorting, wasn’t it?

Nacho was hungry and bored. The Sorting Ceremony was taking forever and so far nothing interesting had happened. He was used to interesting after last year, interesting was fun. Now, he was just leaning his head in his palm and staring, grouchily, at the endless line of students still waiting to be sorted. He was half paying attention to Shacklebolt who was prattling on and on about how great Ravenclaw was and even managed to pull in their dumb looking prefect. Not the girl, the other one. Nacho rolled his eyes hard. He wished he had another frog; this time he’d stuff it in her mouth to shut her up.

Sitting up, Nacho rounded on the scared looking redhead that had happened to sit just near him. He heaved an exaggerated sigh and pulled a face at her. “It’s not that complicated,” he deadpanned. “Just don’t be dumb and you’ll be fine.” It wasn’t… nicely said, but it was the best advice he had. Nacho was proud of himself for contributing without losing his patience or being too naughty. Papa said he had to work on that this year…

Bonnie wasn't their usual exuberant self there was things on the teens mind too mant things, secret things that could never ever be issued, so much that there has even been a nasty streak of satisfaction when Blair had found out that Mrs. Skeeter's precious son had been taken from her. And this feeling only made Bonnie feel worse.

"Welcome to the house everyone! Gia is right about our common room, you dont know how lucky you are." Being underground or underwater would be miserable, Blair supposed the other tower might be alright, but didnt think it could be as nice as their loft.

Blair looked at Ignacio Sidonia skeptically then leaned in to Poppy. "It can be complicated sometimes, really complicated. But thats ok, thats what we are all here for." the fourth year was an excellent student, but had, like anyone, found the other Eagles at the table to be a useful resource when things didnt make sense.

Blair just wished they could be of use right now.

The threads Poppy is in are starting to overlap, so my apologies, everyone! Poppy's attention (and posts) are now in the other thread. Please carry on without me and just assume Poppy is busy being terrified of Alys. xD

Everyone was being so kind! Poppy found herself grinning and nodding eagerly to each and every suggestion that had come her way. She'd accept whatever extra help they wanted to give her. Not that she felt she truly needed it, but having extra knowledge about the castle certainly wouldn't hurt anything. "I would love that." She said to Miss Shacklebolt after her offer was endorsed by the prefect. (Not that she wouldn't have agreed without it, but it was nice to know it was a good decision anyway.)

"Yes, Poppy MacFusty," She replied, though her attention was suddenly torn to a commotion not too far from them. They were still speaking to her, however, and she couldn't be rude—especially not on her first day! "Thank you," She told each of them in turn, who had offered their own helpful advice, even to the younger boy whose version of advice had been put rather bluntly. It was fine; she supposed the gist of what everyone else was saying was along the same lines. Be smart, pay attention, and she'd be fine.

Although she was already failing the latter, as her full attention swiveled to the frantic movements down the table, the conversation completely forgotten.

Nacho had stopped paying attention to the boring chatter around him and started staring over the first year’s shoulder at something going on a few rows down. Uncle Basil had come over and it looked like someone was having a fit. He grinned. Now things were starting to get interesting. He slid up from his seat and wandered over to observe from closer range.
