May 16, 1895 - Ministry of Magic
There was absolutely no reason Matthew ought to have been in the Department of Sports and Games, absolutely none, and yet he strode down the hall with all the purpose of having a reason. And he did. It just wasn't the one he ought to have. In fact his whole reason had to do with the secretary of the department.
When Matthew had first taken a job at the Ministry his father had gotten him an internship under Evander Darrow in the Improper Use of Magic Department. Since his father had wanted it Matthew hadn't even mentioned he'd had his eye on the Sports and Games department where a few of his friends were trying to get jobs. He figured after his internship he could request a transfer to the department. But then Sanditon had happened and Matthew had put off the transfer. That fall something had changed as he'd worked through his caseload. He could never quite explain it, but he didn't bother even considering a transfer. That didn't prevent him from finding reasons to happen into the department though.
At first it had just been to visit his friend, but now, it was entirely different. Ignoring the other hallways Matthew followed the well trod path to the secretary's desk and plopped a file (one, singular, not the best excuse, but it was still an excuse) on Miss Whitby's desk, leaning his hip against the edge of the desk and grinning at beautiful woman who sat behind it.
Miss Whitby was, for all intents and purposes, Matthew's only regret when it came to the department of sports and games. "I bet you a hot cup of tea that you won't guess what's in that file." He declared, eyes glimmering with mischief. Thank Merlin he'd found her by herself or he would have wasted his reason. It'd likely be another month until he had another file to bring to her.\
