Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

December 31st, 1894 — Diagon Alley, New Year, New You

She had been to London before—once to attend the Ministry of Magic, and to acquire school supplies as a child. Gwyn Conway had never had an opportunity to have fun in the city, though, and even though she sometimes found even Hogsmeade overwhelming, in comparison to the Glen, she was practically vibrating with excitement at the opportunity. The young dragonkeeper had always been the sort to wear her emotions on her sleeves—and express them quite readily—which, in this instance, meant she was no doubt particularly obnoxious.

"...know we're here on buisness," the witch retorted as she and Howell stepped through the entry to Diagon Alley, "but after. Really, Howell, you could do with lightening up."

This was about as likely as dragons teaching potions at Hogwarts, but Gwyn nonetheless believed her...not quite father figure, but perhaps cranky uncle figure would be much happier if he sought and expressed joy more than once a quarter.

“I don’t like London,” Howell retorted, with a hmph. He liked being out of the Glen little enough when he came alone, but Gwyn tagging along made London somehow more unbearable than usual. Perhaps because he had to be doubly anxious – once for himself, and doubly in case she would go tearing off getting into trouble and probably end up stabbed and bleeding out in a gutter somewhere. She had no sense of danger. “And I’ll thank you not to give me advice.”

Or he would give her some in return. Namely that she would be clever to keep her mouth shut and stop getting on his nerves, else she could skip off home to the Glen right now.

"Don't like London?!" she gasped in mock horror, elbowing him good-naturedly. Gwyn knew, of course, that Howell had his limits, but had long since learned how to dance right up to the edge of them before scurrying away cackling. "Do the folks at Witch Weekly know your dark secret? I should think—oh!" the young dragonkeeper stopped in her tracks, momentarily distracted from her ribbing of the gruff wizard. "What's that?"

The little stall seemed like an island in the hustle and bustle of the street, altogether nondescript save for the word CHANGES bannered above it.

Damned little heathen. He had been ready to open his mouth at that Witch Weekly comment, because if any of those Weekly Witches so much as knew of his existence Howell would wither away on the spot – but of course Conway could not be kept on-track for more than half a second, anywhere.

“There’s nothing there. You’re seeing things,” he deadpanned, rather wishing that was true. Because whatever that stall was, it looked like it was best avoided. All the look of it did was raise questions – and everyone knew how Howell felt about questions.

"Come on," she urged, turning to walk in the booth's direction with a grin on her face. If anyone could do with a bit of change, it was Howell, who was so fixed in his ways that even statues took note. "It will only take a moment!"

“It’d make a change if you ever listened to me, Gwyn Conway,” Howell muttered, stalking after her as she made a beeline for the shabby little booth. How she knew it would only take a moment when she didn’t even know what the damned thing entailed, Howell had no bloody clue.

Having long learned to tune Howell out when he began his mutterings, Gwyn missed his words entirely in her single-minded (at least from now) progress.

The woman behind the table was old—older than Gwyn's companion at any rate—but seemed like the sort of person who knew things. Not in the insufferable way of which Hogwarts professors had seemed fond, but in a bizarre, worldly fashion. There did not, however, seem to be enough to the display to ascertain what it was. Enegmatic banner aside, there seemed to be only a nondescript plate of bonbons. Was she selling them? What did they have to do with change?

"Change, you say?" Gwyn asked brightly, turning to look at Howell who had followed her, begrudgingly, as she'd known he would.

Howell didn’t bother to disguise his skeptical snort at this set up. An old witch and a bunch of chocolates. Change the world, that would. He bet the bonbons weren’t even charmed.

But the woman had eyed them and asked them what they would change about themselves for the new year, and now Howell nudged Gwyn. “Time to better yourself, eh? You go ahead.” If only they did work, and she could actually learn to do as she was told.

"My charming friend here," Gwyn said cheerfully, if a bit dramatically, to the woman, ignoring said companion entirely, "should learn to lighten up. Is there anything that might be done about that?"

It was to his credit, Howell thought, that he didn’t box her about the ears. Failing that, the easy way out was probably swallowing the stupid sweet the old woman had miraculously produced as the answer-to-his-apparent-problems, but he shot Gwyn an incredulous look instead. “You first now, Conway,” he countered. “She’d like to learn to do precisely what people tell her.”

"I always listen!" she protested, vaguely offended in spite of years of evidence to the contrary. This affront to her honour was enough to return Gwyn's attention to Howell.

"Listening is not the same as obeying, that's all."

“Then maybe you should see about doing the latter, for once in your life,” Howell grumbled, at her being particular over words. Forget listening: if she just kept her mouth shut and followed instructions, the world would be a simpler place. “See? It’s not hard,” he said, succumbing to the goddamned chocolate he’d been given merely to prove an example to her, and chewing it aggressively to boot. Lighten up, his arse.
