Hello! I haven't RPed in years, but I do have experience with paragraph RP (although I suspect my experience is with much longer posts). I would love to get back into it, and the whole system here sounds super cool and the buddy system is so welcoming and lovely but I do have one question -- is it better to play an adult or a first year or a non-firstie student as my first character? I don't have any ideas, really, but I don't know if anyone would be willing to take a chance on me as a complete unknown for an adoptable, so... I don't know! I guess I'm wondering what your advice would be.
Question - New, Should I play a Firstie?

I would always advise choosing a demographic that has a lot of characters in it for your first character. While we’re always looking for uncommon character types, they’re perhaps not easiest to start with!
We have a lot of first years on Charming, if that’s any comfort! I myself have two! The most popular demographic seems to be upper and middle class first years.
You can never go wrong with adults, either! Popular demographics are men in their late 20s/early 30s and ladies in between the ages of 18-23ish. That sky’s the limit, though—we could always use more hospital employees, Ministry employees, and played employees of Hogsmeade shops!
We have a number of adoptable characters, and many members (myself included!) would be delighted to have a new member take one!

Seconding Bree here! Whenever school is in session, a student of any age will definitely be easy to network! You can check out the roster to see which students are already in any given year :)
A lot of us are quite fine letting newbies take on adoptables—just ask around!

Thank you very much for the replies! Once I posted, as so often happens, a character stole into my head and was like "hello, what if you played a rebellious Jewish girl who wants to help goblins but her family would extremely rather she lie low and make no noise and pretend she doesn't exist". Is there any way to, I don't know, workshop a character without being a member? Or perhaps before posting an app? If not, I completely understand! I am just, you know, nervous.
(I checked and religion doesn't seem to be an off-limits topic, since people mention "the Lord" and being religious? I am Jewish, if that helps?)

Hi there! We're very open to characters of different faiths! I actually have a Jewish character myself, though he's not currently active XD
As for networking a character before solidifying ideas, like Bree mentioned there's the adoptable characters to check out; once you make an account you can PM anybody that had one that caught your eye; or the cbox is a great place to get some ideas/connections! Lots of us also have skype and/or discord to chat too! Hope that helps!

In terms of workshopping, our community is generally quite helpful when it comes to answering questions in the forums or the cbox :) For more specific/detailed/complicated matters, though, you may be best off creating an account and firing a PM off to a member of our staff team!
We've got a magical answer to Christianity in addition to actual religions; it was a big part of society during this period, so while the magical world is generally a mix of "we are more tolerant than muggles" and "wtf why are you doing this weird religion thing", from a rules perspective we're totally down with it!
FUN FACT: The Minister of Magic's wife is Jewish.

Ooo welcome, Emma! <3 Everyone basically answered your question already, so I'll just second them here lol
Plottable characters are always fun to check out seeing as the adoptable characters often come equipped with pre-established relationships with other already adopted characters. It makes it easy to network and meet people!!
And speaking as someone who started RPing around middle school and then stopped for a few years until my first year in university, I understand the desire to get back into it ^_^ Welcome to the site!
