Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ
Had it really come to this? Passing Charles Macmillan back and forth like an upright booby prize?

Late July 1895 - Lausanne, Switzerland

The sun was shining on Violetta's last day in Lausanne, having completed her finishing at Brilliantmont and then spending a few extra days here with the various other young ladies before they all returned to their lives around wider Europe. Violetta was heading back to England this evening, and by a little scheming had found herself the last of her class in the town and with some time alone until her parents arrived to collect her.

Finishing school was very private and the ladies were only allowed to visit a very small and curated part of Lausanne. This suited her fine and was now to her advantage that there was noone here that recognised her as she walked down the street past various more middle class establishments. The anonymity was refreshing, even if it was just a tad unnerving. Although these were muggles and if she was in danger she had her wand she supposed.

The anonymity was essential for the last part of her trip to Lausanne. A friend , who just happened to be summering in Europe, had decided to spare her his afternoon. Just a few hours to walk and be a tourist here where nobody knew who they were.

"Victor!" she said with excitement and a beaming smile. "You made it, it is a delight to see you. Shall we?" she offered him her arm to crook. The could promenade a little, enjoy the swiss sun, perhaps some delicate chocolates and some cheese, all the things two young adults in a thoroughly innocent friendship migh take to their delight.

She was getting rather adept at lying to herself.

"Of course I made it," he answered, beaming his great smile at her. Victor barely knew how he got to Lausanne, save for the fact that he wanted to, and then he was. The last night he spent in a rather nice hotel overlooking the great lake and then he gallivanted around, as one did, taking in the sights and the people and thinking the Swiss to be quite droll. Victor had no great admiration or interest for continental life, but he would pretend to, for the Misses of his heart, who herself had continental airs; which suited her charmingly.

He took her arm and they fell into step, he a bit too tall and she a bit too short for it to be exactly easy, but they managed, nonetheless.

"Your schooling must have been most becoming, you look very ladylike and sophisticated on this fine day, Miss Violetta," he decided after taking a proud glance at his fair companion.

The pair walked a little, it was nice, it was relaxing. A few people saw them but nobody cared, which was very refreshing. "Merci, it has been a lovely experience. I am unsure how much I learned that I did not know already, besides the naivety of some of my peers." she giggled and looked at him with a smirk.

"Miss Saint John honestly believed a single kiss might leave her carrying a child. You should have seen her face when I enlightened her." this time it was more of a genuine laugh, and she had to stop herself from losing her demure and ladylike composure. She pulled him in a little closer and leaned up towards him to plant a kiss on his cheek. "Tu m'as manqué" she whispered before pulling and stopping outside a small ladies clothes shop to look in the window at the lovely delicate items on display.

"If this were the case we should be in trouble," Victor replied, and he brimmed with delight at the kiss. Some people might have turned their heads towards them, but for all the folks of Lausanne knew, they might be husband and wife. Newlyweds, perhaps, or honeymooners.

It was a theater that pleased him, even though it was quite removed from practicalities. "Do you like any of it?" he asked, gesticulating towards the shop window. He would quite like to buy her a gift. Miss Violetta received a lot of flowers from him since they knew each other, but flowers wilted. The fine things in this shop would stay with her, perhaps on her lovely head, wrapped around her shoulders to shield against harsh winds, or adorning her wrists or, and how pleasing that would be!, her delicate ankles.

She giggled "We certainly might." she joked back to him. She considered herself a little smarter than falling into that sort of mess, despite her current life choices.

She snapped her head towards him, eyeing him curiously, fashion was her favourite thing in the world. And had a guess at his motive. "It is a brave man who enters a boutique with DeCroix, Monsieur." she joked, turning back and placing her fingers on the glass. She was looking at a fine swiss anklet made of silver and some pale turquoise stone. It had a silver setting for tiny clock hands to be added. The words "au moment où nous nous sommes rencontrés" (the moment we met) were printed on a little card below it alongside the price. She smirked at him, "Do you remember what happened the first time we met?"
