Bragging Rights, but Nicely - Frida Lestrange - July 30, 2018
July 31st, 1888
Dear Kristoffer,
How has it been on the outside? Hogsmeade looks much like London mornings with the fog—but with the unfortunate side-effect of erasing any trace of magic from our wands and persons! Your lack of writing has left under the assumption that you've found something to preoccupy your time this summer, and I wish I could say the same.
Did your school supplies list find its way to Uncle Lucius' home without trouble? Mine did, and much to my delight, it was accompanied by a shiny prefect badge! Perhaps we will get to patrol together come September.
I wish I could be surprised that you've found nothing to occupy yourself with, fog or not: you don't have an enterprising cell in your brain, and it's not as though you have friends to spare to help you there, either.
So you'll understand my surprise at you being appointed Prefect - but I expect it has everything to do with your name, and less to do with any qualities of your own. I suppose my own position paved the way for yours; you should probably be thanking me.
My supplies letter came. I'm still waiting to hear of my extra titles. I presume my new badge got lost in the post. Hogwarts ought to invest in less useless owls.

Dear Kristoffer,
I can't say I understand your need to be so cruel to me. I've never done you wrong and have supported you in your every endeavor as any good sister would, and I will continue to support you as a fellow prefect come September. I have done well in my classwork and have provided help to students in need—qualities I'm sure assisted in my appointment as prefect. Given my house and the treatment I've received from some of my house-mates, I have reason to believe my name did little to help me in that regard.
I'm sure you haven't seen the papers, but Benjamin Turner, Ravenclaw, was appointed Head Boy. I'm sorry. Take comfort in knowing your life after graduation will be far more comfortable than his.
Did I ask you to tell me where I might find comfort, or anything about Benjamin Turner's life? If he makes it to graduation at all, one should A better question yet: did I ask you to write to me?
Why don't you just leave me alone? Summer is the only time I don't have to see you or hear your whingeing. All you do is go on and on, whinge whinge whinge. Why do you think everyone's cruel to you, Frida? Best shut up. Some of us have real problems to deal with.

Kristoffer,
You did not ask, but that doesn't mean there is no value in hearing. I write to you because I am your sister, and in the real world most people care enough to inquire about their siblings' well-being. Forgive me for not pandering to your desire to pretend that you are the only child by our parents, but I cannot pretend to share the same desire. Perhaps if you had paid more attention to us, you might have saved us from being failures in your mind.
Please do enlighten me on your recent troubles gallivanting around London. I do not recall the city being struck by any major tragedy, nor do I recall any recent deaths in the family.
Unlike some, I have the self-possession to keep my problems to myself. If I pander to you, however, do you suppose you will get any less irksome? I suppose it's worth a try as anything. Now, settle in, and picture me caring: how do you do, Frida? Now the fog has been rid from Hogsmeade, have you found something truly wonderful with which to occupy your time?
Ah, and there is something you might enlighten me on, in fact, if you must: why don't you tell me what you know of Miss Borgin? She's a yearmate of yours, so I expect you know more of her than I do. Now there's a use of your time, if you still have none.

Kristoffer,
It's easy to be less annoying when the person I'm speaking to does not believe everything I say is inherently uninteresting. I have finally been able to purchase the necessary school supplies without fear of the fog's ill effects, and I have begun studying for my OWLs so I might not completely disappoint what family I have left.
I'm not sure what interest Miss Borgin is to you, but I can say I have no reason to believe her anything less than a respectable girl. (Perhaps not the kindest girl at Hogwarts, but not disreputable.) From what I've seen and heard, her intellect is best evidenced by her sharp wit, and her values align with our family's.
How tremendously exciting. I am entirely enthralled. I've gotten my own school supplies, too, in fact - what a shock of a summer activity, of course - so I can picture your pastimes exceptionally well. If you require any help with your OWL studying, I suppose you might ask me for help at school. The school might have forgotten all my merits, but I am rather accomplished. Did I tell you how I was one of the first of my year to cast a patronus in a proper form in Defence Against the Dark Arts? The first, even. I mean, naturally, I know, but .
It's none of your business what interest she is to me, obviously. I'll see how reputable she turns out to be in the flesh, I suspect, but I met her earlier this month, and she is one of your new fellow prefects. I expect she'll excel at it. You might get to know her better than you have through it, perhaps; you might even take a leaf out of her book, if you find yourself struggling.
