you're wanted coast to coast - Sirius Black - January 26, 2025

January 26th, 1895 — Corridors
Sometimes Sirius split his prefect patrols by starting at the opposite end of the castle from the prefects, but tonight he and Hesper were patrolling together. Sirius had not offered logic to this arrangement when he proposed it, but it was mostly — and this may have been obvious — done this way so that he could talk at her.

"I need more interesting things to do before the end," Sirius complained. He didn't want this semester to pass in a rush — a rush where he was very much trying to find a way to get HB to agree to a plan that would have him cavorting around Europe. He wasn't even sure he could convince Ursula — she may not like if he were far away. No, he had to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment possible out of these last few months — hence why he was patrolling with Hesper instead of cutting things short by starting at the other end of the castle.

Hesper felt oddly ill at ease patrolling with him and had done since he'd suggested it. She couldn't remember the last time they'd had been alone, not for as long as they would be this evening. Why didn't he go with Flora? She tried to force it all to the back of her head albeit with mixed success.

'The end' makes it sound very ominous. And final. It also had the unpleasant side effect of making her confront the reality that this time next year he'd be a million miles away, figuratively speaking. At least when they parted this time she'd know it was the last time she'd see him. Not that she wouldn't ever see him again but it was probable that they would have a very different relationship, more distant. You should hunt down as many of the castle's secret rooms as you can. Imagine if you found the Chamber of Secrets. I reckon if anyone could get in there, after an all but imperceptible micro pause, you could.

Graduating was very ominous and final, but Sirius wasn't sure that she would take kindly to him pointing that out. He wrinkled his nose at her suggestion. "You think I'm a mystery-solver?" he asked. He really would like to find the Chamber of Secrets, if he could — it would really solidify that he was better than everyone else here — but the suggestion implied that Hesper took him seriously.

Why not? She hadn't thought about it that deeply, but (in her opinion) he was intelligent, curious, adventurous, and stubborn enough to do whatever he set his mind to. If he wanted it enough. She could hardly say all of that to him though, that would be... Well it would be a bit much. He surely knew all that already anyway.

Sirius shrugged his shoulders at her. "Well," he said, "I suppose that I didn't think you considered me a — excuse the pun — serious person." Sirius was smart, but he was also a good time — and sometimes he felt that the latter outweighed the former in many people's eyes.

Hesper fought to stifle a laugh. I've changed my mind, and you ought to dock yourself house points for that. She couldn't decide whether she was more relieved for the sudden levity or oddly irked by it. She decided not to decide and just to ignore it.

Sirius snorted at her. "I'd be more likely to dock house points from you than from me," he jested. He was suddenly in the mood to bait her, and wanted to see if she would take the bait back.

Hesper scoffed at him. You can't, I haven't done anything! In an affectation of haughtiness she thrust her nose in the air. The corners of her mouth were subtly twitching as she fought a smile.

Sirius was fighting an urge to grin, and combatted it by sticking his tongue out at her. "I heard that being Head Boy means I can do whatever I want," he retorted in a snobbish tone.

Something about what he'd just said and done managed to disarm her completely. She didn't hear the giggle that escaped her, nor was she immediately aware of the smile that had finally bested her. She felt oddly dazed and unsettled. That's definitely not true! The words sounded so lame, she'd wanted to say something witty and eloquent but nothing witty and eloquent had come and she couldn't just say nothing. Even you aren't above every rule. She managed to restore some of the pretend superiority to her demeanor and expression but not all of it. If only she could've thought of something more clever to say!

Her giggle seemed more high-pitched than usual. Sirius' grin broadened even further. "Maybe not," he agreed, "But I'm not sure you could manage to explain what I'd done." He might be going a bit too far in his teasing, and he knew it, but it was really hard to resist — especially when she kept behaving like this when he did it.

On the surface of it she wasn't entirely sure what he was trying to imply, but at the same time she seemed to know it wasn't that deep. She pretended to look affronted, letting her jaw drop a fraction of an inch as if she'd gasped. Which she hadn't. Of course I could. Or I'd make something up if I had to!

"Miss Hesper Gamp," Sirius said, tone suddenly stodgy. His mouth was still quirking up around its corners with a suppressed smile. The sarcasm broke through into his voice when he added, "Are you telling me that you can lie? I don't believe it."

He was ridiculous! And he was teasing her. He had been teasing her. She tried to look very solemn as she replied, That's because I'm exceptionally good at it.

Sirius didn't reply verbally, but his amusement spilled out — he barked out a loud laugh at her, startling one of the portraits in the hallway into glowering at him.

She'd more or less expected him to challenge her, but she hadn't expected it in the form of raucous laughter. It immediately provoked her. It's not funny, it's true! Laughter of her own started to creep in despite herself. Stop laughing at me! She clumsily tried to elbow him. I can lie! For some reason him thinking she was incapable of lying incensed her although she couldn't at this moment express why.
