nothing made me feel further away - Cassius Lestrange - January 22, 2025

December 19th, 1894 — Fort Lestrange
With a large-ish family event tomorrow, and Christmas approaching, they had to share a bedroom. It had happened before, most notably on their honeymoon, but it hadn't happened during Adrienne's pregnancy or since. Cash changed into his pajamas and sat on the edge of the bed, watching her get ready for bed. It would be fine. It would probably be fine. He hadn't done anything strange in his sleep in months — at least as far as he knew. He ran a hand through his hair.

"I'm nervous," Cash announced, with a self-deprecating smile. He was trying to be more honest about his feelings, at least some of the time.

Even though they had everything properly with them at the Lestrange Manor, Adrienne still felt apprehensive there; not unlike an intruder, but still someone not entirely welcome and she wondered if her husband felt the same. There seemed to be something thrumming in the air she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

She put her robe on the chaise and threw the covers back as her husband’s voice broke through her thoughts. “You’re nervous?” She blinked, pausing with one knee on the bed. Perhaps that was what she was feeling. The idea of seeing everyone tomorrow…presenting Perseus to the entire family. Adrienne smiled back with a soft laugh as she continued to get into bed. “I thought it was just me.”

Cash smiled back at her, tentative. It came as a relief to know that he wasn't the only one, although he wished that one of them wasn't nervous. "Oh, no," he said, "Definitely not just you." He moved to his side of the bed, because if she was getting in he might as well stop sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Adrienne lifted up the covers and climbed in, the motion feeling slightly awkward given they were sleeping in the same bed. She was happy with their sleeping arrangements though, and found herself wanting her husband near. That he was nervous served as a bit of a comfort, however illogically so. She reached for his hand to give it a small squeeze. “Well that’s a relief to hear.” She replied, leaning forward to brush the back of the same hand against his cheek. “I’m sure it’s all for nothing. Perseus is a darling child, and we shan’t force any of your relatives to hold him if they don’t want to.” She joked.

When they shared a bed on their honeymoon, Cash had quietly cast silencing charms on himself, which he undid in the morning. He was not sure that he'd been making sound in his sleep, lately, but he still did not want to cast those spells this time. It felt like — just another lie. He followed her lead and joined her under the covers. "Hm, I'm not sure Cousin Gretchen's ever held a baby," he joked, returning it.

"Listen," Cash said, "If I — whimper in my sleep or anything, please nudge me with your elbow."

He didn't talk in his sleep, thank Merlin, and never had — but he was still sometimes afflicted by nightmares.

The idea of Gretchen Lestrange holding her child caused Adrienne to let out a full-bellied laugh. The image was too amusing to picture, but she just might feel tempted to make it a reality. “Don’t give me any ideas, Cash,” She giggled, settling back into the plump pillows.

His next request came out of the blue, and the smile dropped from her face as she looked at her husband. Whimper? She rotated her body slightly, looking at him with unreserved concern. “W-why would you do anything of the sort?”

He had never told her about this, mostly because he hadn't wanted to see this exact look of relentless concern on her face. "It's silly," he said, couching it preemptively. He didn't want to worry her; he did not want to be honest with her. He was trying to be more honest with her.

"I have nightmares, sometimes," Cash admitted, with a grimace, "It's nothing you should worry about."

Her hand came to rest over his as she searched his expression. It’s silly. It certainly didn’t seem like something silly if it led him to whimpering in his sleep. Adrienne looked at him with concern. “Nightmares?” She echoed softly. “What kinds of nightmares?” Of course she would worry, especially if they’d been plaguing her husband and she hadn’t known about them.

As his wife did she have any right to know about these sorts of things? She certainly didn’t think her Papa would concern himself with anything of the sort when it came to Ambrosia, but she’d gone into this marriage at least determined to have a different kind of marriage than them.
