It has been nearly eight weeks since you afforded me a word. I will not insult either of us by asking you to forgive what you cannot yet believe. I don't think it unfair of me to ask that you grant me the opportunity to participate in your life again.
I love you. Whatever you think of me, you have no power over that. I love you. I am devoted to being your wife. I still believe we can redefine these archaic roles into something that respects us both. And today, I ask that some memory of me can compel you to try.
I ask you to compromise. Please, meet me somewhere in public view. If you will not do it for me, do it to avoid the attention of rumors. Neither of us is interested in public scrutiny. Is there a salon or ballet we could attend together? Any of the hundreds of generic events you and I are expected to attend. Please grant me this.

She did know him at least a little, it turned out; the remark about not wanting to attract scrutiny hit true. Of course, they would attract far more scrutiny if they went out in public together and ended up making a scene of some sort, but she knew that. She surely wouldn't take a risk like that — surely she could not imagine that if she did, whatever stunt she had concocted would win him over in the end.
