Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

28th June, 1888 — Museum of Magical Miscellany, London
Holly Scrimgeour
It was somehow the most tedious and tense summer Connie could remember experiencing since she had taken up the post at Hogwarts and, far from counting the days until she returned to the energizing bustle of the school she was instead filled with unease about whether she would even be able to. Hogsmeade was inaccessible for the likes of her and even if the Ministry saw fit to free up train space for the children not already trapped there to make the journey back to school she doubted the Headmaster would lower his boundary for mere children. And that was assuming the Ministry had managed to get any hold on the situation by then: the fog had spread rapidly so perhaps it would recede just as quickly? But where had it come from in the first place?

It was a ponderance at the forefront of Connie's mind as she idly wondered the museum in the faint hope of distracting herself from worrying thoughts of what her friends were enduring. With them on her mind she had no passion for travel, as was her usual custom during the summer, and so she found herself stuck in the sweltering heat of a London summer, finding refuge anywhere she could. Thankfully the airy, high-ceilinged rooms that held the relics of witch hunts were blessedly cool, even if the contents were troubling, but Connie barely saw them as she wondered.

The one thing that did catch her eye, however, was the back of a familiar blonde head leaning close to a plaque on the wall Connie dreaded to imagine the contents of. She wasn't entirely sure this was the best place for the girl in question but her smile twitched to life for the first time in days as she reached the girl's shoulder.

"Miss Scrimgeour, we may not be in school but I still feel I should ask where your chaperone is?" She asked without any censure and a deal of amusement in her voice.

June 29th, 1888 - Diagon Alley
Tuni had managed to work just a half a day but had chosen to stop by her rooms to get Eliza then head down to Diagon Alley. With the news of Quidditch being suspended just a few days prior, she'd wanted to get some cookies (again) to bring to Rufus. The last batch had been awfully crushed amidst her drunken antics. The thought of that evening colored her cheeks with a blush that she turned away from her maid so that it wouldn't be noticed. She'd hardly had a chance to see Rufus since them so it only made sense to bring something to him. He likely wasn't happy with the news.

They'd gone back to her now favorite bakery and picked up a few of the cookies and were headed on their way to Rufus's temporary home when she saw a gentleman that looked awfully familiar. He wasn't too far away from where they were, walking in their direction. As she drew nearer, she had a bit of an "ah-ha" moment when she realized why he looked familiar. He was Febs's auror!

"It's you!" she exclaimed, startling Eliza enough with her abrupt start that the other woman almost walked right into her. She looked him over, inspecting his face with some scrutiny. "Must not have seen her lately. There's no bruises on your face from her fist," she said after she'd finished her assessment, smirking all the while cause he surely didn't have a clue who she was even if she knew exactly who he was.

June 28th, 1888 — Irvingly Infirmary
Enoch Rosier
Dionisia was unsurprisingly still in Irvingly following the the fog invasion that was wrecking havoc on the small village outside of Hogsmeade. While the infirmary was equipped with healers and nurses, mediwitches they were not, which meant the hospital had been picking up cases where immediate medical attention was needed.

One of the more notable cases of the month had been of Mr. Enoch Rosier, an auror who had taken quite the tumble while in pursuit of a crook. He was a tall and dashing gentleman—charming, even—but his wealth and blood status (which she'd learned later after some light digging) had left her unsure of how to approach him next.

After returning to the infirmary for the day, she'd been tasked with taking Mr. Rosier for a stroll in the grounds outside the infirmary to test his strength and stamina. She entered his room with a smile on her face, but not before taking a moment to self-consciously tidy with her hair for whatever reason.

"Good morning, Mr. Rosier," she greeted. "The healers tell me you've been quite the trooper; they'd like to see how well you can take a spin around the infirmary."

June 28th, 1888 — Diggory House, Swallowbury

“We’re throwing a party”, she announced as she unceremoniously slapped her copy of The Daily Prophet down upon the breakfast table—upon her breakfast, actually; that was unintended. The headline continued to flash up at her: generic fog headline #376 or some such; to be fair, Inès Valentine was past the point of paying attention.

She had come to England—well, Scotland—with the intent of enjoying herself. She’d find love for some, find fame for her, and have a jolly good time with both. This ridiculous fog, though, was putting a damper on things, the tedium in turn fogging up her inner eye. She was not a seer who could See if not in a good mood. A party, though, even one without magic, would help break up the monotony if nothing else.

“I don’t know when, or where,” she conceded sheepishly, “but It Is Known.”

The last was said with, perhaps, more dramatic flair than was needed for her audience of Dolores, but Inès had always been the dramatic flair sort.

Late Evening of June 8th, 1888 - Highstreet
Following this!
I'll set sail and drift away
So I won't need you here
Love sinks and hope floats
In a river of tears
-Alessia Cara
Of all the stupid idiotic things Emmeline had ever done, going to Mr. Whitledge's graduation party was perhaps at the very tip top. No, it wasn't attending the party that was the issue. It was the quick succession of four shots of firewhiskey. She still couldn't shake the burning taste in her mouth. Though, it had only been a few moments since she'd run from the pub that was clearly bad luck for her family.

The moment she'd fled from Mr. Whitledge, she'd started crying. The tears had fallen in steady streams down her face as she'd pushed her way forcibly from the pub to get outside and as far away from it all as she possibly could. The bite of the cold night air was refreshing, helping her to get her bearings about her at least somewhat but it certainly wasn't enough to sober her up instantly. No, she'd drank too much too fast for that and it did little to quell the tears falling.

Said tears had a nasty habit of blurring vision. And, already clumsy on her feet, she soon found herself tripping and stumbling to the ground. At least she was far enough away from the pub not to be noticed by any of the occupants there but when she looked up she realized she didn't actually know where she was. "Bloody hell," she sobbed from her spot on the ground, almost content enough to just stay there and expire on the streets of Hogsmeade.

Carmilla

IT'S THE VAMPIRE RENAISSANCE Y'ALL.

From goodreads:

A classic Victorian vampire novella, which influenced Bram Stoker's later treatment of the vampire mythos in Dracula.

Yah, goodreads doesn't have a lot to say. That and "LESBIANS???" was all I kinda knew before reading it.
A bit more, from wikipedia:
Carmilla is a Gothic novella by Irish author, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) by 26 years. First published as a serial in The Dark Blue (1871–72), the story is narrated by a young woman preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla [...]

Laura, the teenage protagonist, narrates, beginning with her childhood in a "picturesque and solitary" castle amid an extensive forest in Styria, where she lives with her father, a wealthy English widower retired from service to the Austrian Empire. When she was six, Laura had a vision of a beautiful visitor in her bedchamber. She later claims to have been punctured in her breast, although no wound was found.

Twelve years later [...] a carriage accident outside Laura's home unexpectedly brings a girl of Laura's age into the family's care. Her name is Carmilla. Both girls instantly recognize the other from the "dream" they both had when they were young...

It's a very short read, y'all can do it in no time if you haven't already! In the meantime, a couple of (super optional!) discussion questions:
  • If you have read Dracula, or read/watched/consumed any other vampire or gothic literature, how did this compare re: tropes, style, vampire mythology?
  • What did you make of the plot / characterisation / narrative style?

This is a discussion thread for people who have read or are reading the book in question. With that in mind, there are likely to be spoilers throughout. However, in the event of major twists or “how it ends”, please wrap content in spoiler tags.

Hullo!  OWL and NEWT scores will be released late in July, and it is your friendly neighbourhood deputy headmaster who signs off on them!

Each year, I offer to physically send them for added realism, and this year I am offering to generate them as well! When you request, you can request with...

  • Pre-chosen, aka you tell me the grades and I send them
  • Certain Requirements, aka you tell me what courses you want for your NEWT (if 5th) or what career you want (if 7th) and I generate scores (with stats or true random) that still allow for that
  • Modified Random, aka random based on #Stats
  • True Random, aka random regardless of anything to do with your character

PLEASE POST BELOW IF INTERESTED~
