One of the cheapest homeless shelters in Victorian London charged four pennies to sleep in a coffin. Which was... still better than sleeping upright against a rope? — Jordan / Lynn
If he was being completely honest, the situation didn't look good, but Sylvano was not in the habit of being completely honest about anything. No reason to start now.

Do You Have an Idea?

We are always looking for the next big idea (or even moderately-sized idea) for events—something that can attract a large number of characters be it a hosted event or something else. Please post here if you have suggestions for...

  • A one-off event (carnival, dance, flower show, etc.) that appeals to the middle and/or working classes, or to non-humans.
  • A mini boardwide event such as the snowstorm and spiked tea we've had in the past.
  • A major boardwide plot that affects characters from all classes and at least three usergroups.
The staff will pop in here every time we feel more inspiration is needed—and there might be board contribution stamps on the table for those whose ideas are used!

Lay Your Claim!

Charming's stamp program rewards character and player achievement with pretty stamps to add to your collection. In order to claim a stamp you're owed, start a new thread in this forum detailing the stamps you're in the market for and your evidence, if applicable. A member of staff will pop in, give it the thumbs up/down, and lock the thread once all requested stamps have been accomplished!

If you are looking for more than one at at time, please just use one thread!

Still need to start your collection? Enter the code below into the STAMPS section of your User CP!

The Process

Welcome to Charming! Once you’ve registered your account (First Last as your username, please!) and read all the supporting info relevant to your character, it’s time to begin the application process.

1. Fill in our application template and post it as a new thread in this forum. If it is unfinished, throw that in the title so we know, but remember to remove it when you’re ready for the staff to take a look ;)

2. A member of our staff team will take a look and either approve it or send you a PM with a couple of housekeeping notes to see to before we can.

3. Once approved, that same member of staff will port your application over into your account profile. This will be the living document that you edit going forward.

4. Sort out your claims! Head on over here to see all the options available, but don’t forget the mandatory Character Directory and the popular PB list.

5. GET POSTING!

The original application is locked after approval and serves as a ‘baseline’ for staff reference. 99.9% of the time, your account profile will be the one looked at by the member base :)

Please be advised: at Charming, we ask that you wait three days between the approval of one application and the posting of the next, OR post your most recent character 3+ times in-character.

Lonely Threads

The purpose of this list is to post the links to your lonely threads in order to bring other players' attention to it. Simply post here with a link to the thread. If you'd like a certain type of person to join or have a particular plot in mind for it, feel free to include that. Once your thread has been replied to please edit your post and say so. The staff will then delete your request to keep things nice and neat.

In order to help the staff keep the list tidy, please refrain from grouping all of your open threads into one post. Post a new post  for each thread instead!

Lonely Plots

Have you got a grand idea for a plot but need a role (or roles) filled in before it can really take off? Post below describing the sort of character you need, your intention for them, and, if possible, how many threads you might require!

For example:

Quote:Wanted for Jeremy Rohlwing: a potioneer he can pay to brew an (unsuccessful) Eyesight-Improving Potion for him. MC/WCAB, professional or amateur, does not have to be reputable. Estimated 1-3 threads. Contact MJ by Skype.

You can be as vague or as detailed as you like!  Requests for specific characters to be created must instead be posted in plottable characters. This thread is intended only to recruit existing characters into your schemes.

Adoptable Plots

Do you have an idea for a plot but no characters to carry it out with? Are you looking to shake things up with your crew, but struggling for ideas? Dump your ideas here, however vague, and maybe someone will give them the loving home they deserve!

Member-Run Events

Events in the Victorian world were one-time social hubs. From a roleplay perspective, they can help spark creativity and encourage interaction between characters who might not have met otherwise. Member-run events are an important aspect of Charming's community. If you're looking to make one, then you've come to the right place!

Your character might find themselves throwing...

  • Balls
  • Exclusive events for limited audiences
  • Weddings
  • Funerals

More specific and creative events are likely to garner larger OOC interest, and might include...
  • Events targeted at Working Class characters.
  • Political events. (ex. a garden party to discuss communism)
  • Sporting events. (ex. a tennis tournament)
  • Charity events. (ex. a fundraising luncheon)
  • Seasonal events. (ex. a Guy Fawkes themed event in November)

Okay, let's do this!

To get your event listed reply to the monthly calendar thread with the form found below. Your event will then be added to the calendar.

It is perfectly acceptable and realistic to have multiple events on one day, though two events for the same group of people may end up in competition with each other.

As of May 2020, we have a new event form for you to fill out! All fields are rather the same, but we have added two new features to help streamline some things.

Click below to show a detailed tutorial on how to fill the new fields in the event form out. For examples of existing events, click here.

SOME NOTES:
—Third years and higher are allowed to go on Hogsmeade visits. Students who have written permission from their parents/guardians are allowed to visit their families in Hogsmeade if there is a good reason, such as a family emergency, a wedding, or a funeral. For more information on leaving school grounds, click here.

—Since it was considered improper for young ladies to walk about without chaperons, Hogwarts provides chaperons through teachers and Head of Houses as well as other staff members during Hogsmeade visits. They are assigned to a location and whomever wants to go to that particular location will be escorted there in a group. Seeing as the groups could be rather large, it would be easy to escape from the chaperon's view, though is greatly frowned upon and could result in a detention.

—O.W.L.s are tests taken by all fifth years. N.E.W.T.s are tests taken by all seventh years. Students not enrolled in the subject writing on a given day will have that day free of classes, to study for other subjects.

—Quidditch game outcomes (unplayed) are determined by die rolls, coin flips, and player ability.

—Charming uses house points to determine the winner of the House Cup.

—To apply for a student staff position, please fill out this form and PM it to a staff member, who will then post it up for scoring in the staff forum.  For student quidditch positions, please post in maintenance to claim.

So You Want to be in the Wizengamot?

The WG is the Ministry’s group of lawmakers, as well as the highest legal court. Members are appointed no earlier than their thirtieth birthday, and may serve until their death if they so choose. Unless they’re arrested, the one reason they could be fired.

Click below for a list of current members. Even if inactive, they still hold a seat.

Hierarchy

The Wizengamot is made up of roughly fifty members. This group automatically contains the Minister of Magic, Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and Senior Undersecretary to the Minister. While not all individuals are current Ministry employees, almost all of them are former.

The WG is formally led by the Chief Warlock (which has, on occasion, also been female), though in truth s/he is on equal footing with the Minister of Magic and the Head of the DMLE.

The senior-most regular members of the WG are the Interrogators. They are tasked with leading the prosecution of criminals during the trials the council oversees.

Following that, the body of the Wizengamot is tasked with drafting, debating, and passing the various laws that govern the Wizarding world.

WG scribes are not formally members of the group and have no power beyond writing things down and running errands.

Appointment

New members must be nominated by the present Minister of Magic or Chief Warlock, but must also be approved by at least 51% of the existing membership. The entire process, from nomination to appointment, can take anywhere from thirty to one-hundred-twenty days, depending on how bogged down they are and whether or not some of the very old members remembered to vote.

Most new Ministers will try to bring in a new face during their first year in Office, both to show he has support and to bring in more support.

Interested?

Because this is such a dignified position, it requires staff approval, much like prefects. If you/your character is interested, please verify that they meet the following requirements:
  • 30+ years of age.
  • 10+ years in the Ministry of Magic or a vastly notable member of the community.
  • Non-nobility.
  • Middle or Upper Class
  • Reputation of Seven or Higher
  • A. 1819-1827: Upper Class Pureblood
  • A. 1835-1841: Pureblood
  • A. 1849-1855: Most likely period for females, though not only females appointed.
  • A. 1865-1881: Pureblood or Halfblood with two magical parents.
  • A. 1865-1884: Upper Class
  • A. 1865-1884: Fully human—checks for vampirie, veela, and werewolf backgrounds in effect.
  • A. 1884-Present: Publically non-prejudiced.
  • Your history records are up-to-date.
The A. notes are in placed based upon the prejudices of the leadership at the time applicable.

If you meet the necessary qualifications, please submit the following form to any member of the staff team for assessment. We will get you a reply ASAP!
